Donald Mitchell – Speaker, Bander, Master Gardener
Donald Mitchell obtained a M S. degree in Conservation Biology at the University of Minnesota and has conducted field studies of hummingbirds and the plants they pollinate in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Colorado and California. He is a federally-permitted hummingbird bander and former Vice President of the Minnesota Ornithologists’ Union. A Goodhue County Master Gardener, Donald attracts hundreds of hummingbirds annually to his garden near the Mississippi River in Red Wing.
Mr. Mitchell’s hummingbird banding demonstrations are always one of the more popular events at the Henderson Hummingbird Hurrah. He will also have a presentation after lunch on attracting hummingbirds to your garden and provide insights regarding hummingbird biology that will help you understand why some ideas for attracting hummingbirds work while others fail.
Jim Gilbert – Speaker, Author, Biologist
Jim hosts the Nature Notes program for WCCO Radio and also a well known and respected naturalist, phenologist and educator. He has been associated with the Freshwater Society and has provided the phonology information for the Minnesota Weatherguide Environment TM Calendar since 1977.
As an author , he has written Jim Gilbert ‘s Minnesota Nature Notes and Minnesota Outdoor Wonders: Exploring the Wonders of Minnesota Month by Month, as well as a nature column which appears in several newspapers.
Jim is the former Executive Director of the Linnaeus Arboretum and former Naturalist at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota. He graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in 1962. After earning a Master of Natural Science Degree from the University of Oklahoma, he studied at several other institutions. For 30 years Jim served the Hopkins Public Schools as a science teacher and naturalist, retiring in 1998.
Through words and images, Jim Gilbert will inspire children and adults as he shares some of the natural wonders one can observe during a Minnesota August.
Sarah Johnson Malchow – Master Gardener
Sarah Johnson Malchow has earned the University of Minnesota Master Gardener designation and has been assistant manager at Drummers Garden Center & Floral, Mankato, for over 13 years. Sarah is most interested in managing pests and disease without chemical inputs and gardening with tropicals, woody ornamentals, perennials and food crops. She routinely serves as a guest presenter at the Le Sueur Retail and Business Expo, where she introduces new plants and gardening ideas to interested residents. Sarah will be conducting our morning garden tour at 10:30 a.m.
Robert Janssen, well known Minnesota author and teacher will be one of our featured speakers. Robert is past president of the Minnesota Ornithologists’ Union, and is currently coordinator for the Minnesota Breeding Bird Survey (US Fish & Wildlife Service) , to name a couple of Roberts many activities. He is also author to “Birds in Minnesota” 1987, co-author “Minnesota Birds” 1975. Janssen, 84, has a newer book, “Birds of Minnesota State Parks,” that was almost 18 years in the making and was published in April 2015.
Jackie Smith – Master Gardener
Jackie Smith, retired coordinator of the Carver-Scott Extension Master Gardener program, is still an active Master Gardener volunteer. Jackie is an accomplished gardener and teacher from Belle Plaine. She will lead our afternoon garden tour at 2:30 p.m.
Lana Beck – Artist
Le Sueur’s Lana Beck, artist, muralist, illustrator, has been producing beautiful murals for over 20 years. Offering “painting party” sessions has become very popular, helping anyone become an artist and paint their very own picture.
